responsible for managing oceanographic data collected through WESTPAC, an international project administered by IOC, and other such projects.
Making the most of the functions of these organizations, JMSA is actively promoting secondary and tertiary utilization of oceanographic data by gathering, managing, and providing data and information pertaining to the oceans and seas, both domestically and internationally.
As of the end of FY 1995, JODC is gathering oceanographic data and information regarding seven types of informational subjects, such as oceanographic survey plans and reports, and 23 types of data items, such as ocean currents, tides, and ocean depth. By providing these types of data and information, JODC contributes to marine development and utilization which are diversifying increasingly, and to the understanding of global environmental problems.
In addition, from FY 1995, JODC established an on-line system, using the Internet, to strive to distribute data quickly internationally.

2. Providing Information Domestically
JMSA is promoting the most up-to-date maintenance of the "Responsible Information Control System." This system makes it possible to search for information required through the creation of a respective data base for each sea area, by examining the oceanographic data and various oceanography-related documents in the possession of oceanographic and related enactments and the location of charts. The goal is to make it possible to offer greatly broader general use of information.
