3. Situation Regarding the Occurrence of Accidents Resulting in Injury or Death
 
(1) Situation Regarding the Occurrence of Non-Distress Accidents Resulting in Injury or Death of Crew Members
In 1995, there were 939 crew members who were the victims of non-distress accidents, such as persons who fell overboard or become injured or ill while onboard. Of these, 326 persons died or are missing. Of the dead or missing, those who fell overboard account for the largest number. This is followed by those who became ill, and then those who committed suicide. Furthermore, of those who fell overboard, the crew members of fishing vessels accounted for 62%.
 
(2) Situation Regarding the Occurrence of Coastal Accidents
In 1995, there were 1,402 victims of coastal accidents, and of these 903 died or are missing. Victims of accidents related to scuba diving, windsurfing, surfing, shore fishing, swimming and other marine leisure activities account for 45% of the total, and the death rate (the percentage of those dead or missing in the total number of accident victims) is 49%.
 
4. Situation Regarding Rescuing Accidents Victims
 
(1) Situation Regarding the Rescue of Victims of Non-Distress Accidents Resulting in Injury or Death of Crew Members
In 1995, of the 939 victims of non-distress accidents among crew members, when the 300 who saved themselves on their own are excluded, 313 persons were rescued. The year's rescue rate (percentage of the number of persons rescued in the total number of accident victims, excluding those who saved themselves on their own) was 49% (41% in 1994).
 
(2) Situation Regarding the Rescue of Coastal Accidents Victims
In 1995, of the 1,402 victims of coastal accidents, when the 75 who rescued themselves on their own are excluded, 424 persons were rescued. The year's rescue rate was 32% (37% in 1994).
 
5. Situation Regarding Helicopter Airlift Rescues
In 1995, JMSA conducted helicopter airlift rescues for 99 crew members on ships requiring rescue and 14 victims of non-distress accidents either at sea or in remote locations, such as isolated shorelines. The total was 113 persons rescued. Since beginning airlift
