III. Security Mission Against Strife at Sea and Guard and Escort Operations
 
1. Security Mission Against Strife at Sea
In 1995, JMSA carried out a total of 864 security missions against strife at sea related to docking at or embarkation from Japanese ports by foreign warships, the marine transport of nuclear matter, information on the bombing of ships, and the construction of atomic power plants and airports.
 
2. Guard and Escort Operations
In 1995, JMSA provided escort for the Japanese Imperial Family on 57 occasions, including escort for Their Imperial Highnesses, the Emperor and Empress, when they attended the 15th National Rally for Creating a Prosperous Sea. In addition, JMSA provided escort for Japanese and foreign VIPs on 100 occasions.
 
3. Security Missions Against Unusual Crimes
JMSA established the Osaka Special Security Base in May 1996, to promptly and appropriately handle special maritime security missions requiring sophisticated knowledge and skills, such as hijackings at sea and the use of Sarin and other toxic gases.
