1. Introduction
JAMSTEC has been developing new surface mooring buoy system since FY 1994, in order to meet the scientific objective to understand actual ocean circulation and heat transport. In FY1994, the conceptional buoy design was carried out. In FY 1995, the basic buoy design and construction of the prototype buoy was carried out, and the open sea trial of the prototype buoy has been started. In this article, the technological aspects of the surface mooring buoy system will be described referring the prototype buoy.
2. Technological feature of the buoy system
The technological feature of the buoy system is as follows,
1)Real time data transmission to shore via satellite communication system
2)Electro-magneto-induction modem for under water sensor data transmission
Real time data transmission of under water sensor data
Easy installation of under water sensor
Less expensive than E/M cable
3)Standard installation of Salinity sensor
4)Adoption of Recovery buoy
Recovery of under water sensor etc. in case of surface buoy lost
Reduction of mooring line tension
5)High volume/space efficiency by adopting hemisphere plus cylinder type buoy float shape
