For the maintenance & repair of existing coaches & wagons. MR needs average 42
millions Kyats in foreign exchange per year.
For purchasing the spare parts to repair and maintenance the rolling stock. NW received
the foreign exchange as follow: -

For the next five years from 1996 to 2000. (55) Nos. of Diesel Locomotives will be due
for 30 years of expire life. As a result (55) Nos. of locomotives will have to be replaced
- and more locomotives will have to be reinforced for increased Traffic demand.
Passenger Conches and Freight Wagons
Myanmar Rail ways has at present a fleet of 683 Nos. of passenger coaches. Out of these
coaches 36.26% are available for use and the rest 13.74% are under repair & awaiting
repair. Life of the passenger coaches is 30 years and out of these over age coaches 274
Nos of coaches are now using due to insufficient fleet. The additional requirement
expected to meet an increasing traffic services will be around 500 Nos in the next five
years. During that period the available coaches on book will decrease to 566 Nos. after
scrapping of 181 Nos. which shall reach an expire life of 30 years. The total requirement
in the next five years will be around 600 Nos. of coaches. About 120 Nos. of coaches must
be reinforced every year for the survival of traffic services. Age group of these
passenger coaches are as follow:-
