CHAPTER 6 OTHER CANDIDATE ROUTES FOR LRT OPERATION

As of the time of study completion, the following four routes can be considered as potential candidates.
1)Sea Point to CBD (previously a tramcar route)
2)Table Mountain Cable Car Station (important tourist spot in Cape Town) to CBD
3)District Six (planned site for construction of low price housing) to CBD
4)Olympic facilities-old freight yard development district (Culemborg) to CBD

6.1 Waterfront-Sea Point

The coastal area at the base of Signal Hill in the north-east of the Waterfront area is known as Sea Point. This area contains high class housing, apartments, a golf course and football pitch, etc., and its main roads are lined with shops, restaurants and entertainment quarters. Tramcars ran through this district in the past, and the idea is to extend the planning line of the CBD- Waterfront route into this area.
The population of this area is quite high at 23,000 (30% of the inner city population), and there is much movement into the CBD from here. Buses and minibus-taxis are the only mode of public transport currently operating here, and the frequency of bus services is the highest in the inner city (three routes with 44 services/day running one way and a peak hourly frequency of 12 buses/hour running one way). From this, it is thought that there is a potentially high demand for frequent LRT services from commuters, shoppers and people visiting restaurants, etc.
The required line length is approximately 4.5 km (Sea Point-Waterfront).

6.2 CBD-District Six

The inner city District Six currently consists of approximately 100 ha of unused land, but the city has plans to construct low price housing there for approximately 20,000 people.
It is considered that the LRT could play an important role as a public mode of transport to be used by the future residents of this district.
The required line length is approximately 2 km.
