3.2 Zone Characteristics of the Inner City Area

(1)Zoning
The inner city area, centered around the CBD, stretches from Sea Point in the south-west to the base of Table Mountain in the south and close to Salt River in the north-east, and it covers an area of approximately 34 km2. This area is zoned into a total of 35 blocks. (shown in Figure 3-2)
(2)Zone Indices
Figure 3-3 shows the distribution of population and working population in the inner city area zones, and Figures 3-4 and 3-5 respectively show the density of population and working population in each zone.
From the figures it can be seen that there is hardly any (residing) population in the CBD but a strong concentration in the outlying areas, whereas conversely, the working population is concentrated in the inner city and north-east, indicating the existence of a bipolar structure.
(3) Traffic Volume
1) Commuter Flows
Commuter flows as based on the door-to-door survey of 1991 are as shown in Table 3-2, and the number of trips relating to the inner city area are as follows in Table 3-1.
