Effects of exercise and restriction of energy intake on blood profiles in middle aged obese women

Noboru HOTTA

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of caloric restriction alone during the initial 4 weeks and the combined effects of exercise combined with caloric restriction of enengy intake for an additional 4 weeks on body compostition, maximal aerobic power (Vo2 max) and blood profiles in overweight women. Subjects were obese middle aged women with a BMI {body weight (kg) /stature (m)2} above 26.0 or %Fat over 35.0oo (skinfold method).
The dietary regimen consisted of 1200-1400 kcal/day for 8 weeks with nutritional instruction, while exercise was mainly walking in which over 300 kcal/day were burned according to a device to measure energy expenditure for the final 4 weeks.
No significant difference was found in body weight, 00fat and fat mass reduction for the initial 4 weeks by a dietary regimen alone. However, there were significant decreases in %fat and fat mass by a dietary regimen comhined with exercise. Maximal aerobic power remained constant through-out the initial 4 weeks, while aerohic exercise (walking) combined with a dietary regimen not only produced a greater loss of fat, hut also increased maximal aerobic power f or the final 4 weeks.
After 4 weeks of caloric restriction alone, there was a significant decrease in blood sugar and total cholesterol, but HDL-cholesterol was not changed. HDL-cholesterol was significantly in-creased by the exercise program combined with the dietary regimen for final 4 weeks. The relationship between the rate of increase in HDL-cholesterol and energy expenditure in dialy walking showed a significant positive correlation.
Thus, in extremely overweight women, a regimen involving caloric restriction alone initially, and then an exercise program comhined with caloric reduction was a useful means of influencing hody composition, maximal aerohic power and blood profile.
