Relationship between health index and health related physical fitness test (II) −Males in their 40s−

This study investigated the minimal level that must be maintained fur good health as well as the critical level for health by investigating the relationship between Health Index Score (HIS), based on the results of a health check up and health-risk lifestyle habits and the results of the Health Related Physical Fitness Test (HRPFT). The subjects were 631 men in their 40s (Meant SD=44.72.7), employed at the same company. Relative grip strength (muscle strength), estimated Vo2 max (endurance), trunk flexion in a sitting postion with the legs extended straight out (flexibility)and body reaction time (agility) were selected as the parameters for the HRPFT. BMI, blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose (EBS), uric acid (UA), smoking,drinking and exercise habits were selected as the parameters for HIS. Subjects were given one point for abnormal and zero points for normal results in the medical check test and were given one point for each health-risk lifestyle habit. HIS consisted of 9 items, so the lowest score was 7 points whilethe optimal score was 0 points.
We then investigated the relationship between the five ranks of the results of the HRPFT and the score of health-risk lifestyle habits (risk factors for lifestyle-related diseases). The results were as follows
?@ Subjects with a lower relative grip strength, estimated Vo2max, trunk flexion in a sitting position with the legs extened straight out and reaction time, demonstrated a higher HIS score.
?A Based on past studies, we conclude that an HIS score of 3 (risk factors for health) or more is not favorable for continued good health. Subjects with an HIS score of 3 or more showed that the critical level was 66.1 for relative grip strength, 41.2 mI/kg/mm for estimated ~o2max, 2.4 cm for flexibility and 373 msec for reaction time.
