Relation between bone density and isometric muscle strength
in middle-aged and elderly women and the time needed to stand up
Tamotsu YAMADA
This study examined the relationship between bone density and isometric muscle strength and the time needed to stand up. The subjects consisted of 35 women (45-74 years old). Bone density (Total body BMc, BMD and Leg BMC, BMD),isometric knee extension and flexion and the time needed to stand 1, 3 and 5 times from a sitting position.
The main results are summarized as follows
1) Total body BMD decreased with age.
2) A highly significant relationship was found between Leg BMC and weight, height.
3) There was no significant relationship between bone density and isometric muscle strength.
4) Similarly, there was no significant relationship between bone density and the time needed to stand 1, 3 and 5 times from a sitting position.
