Takanori MIYAUCHI

There are several possible interpretations of "desirable" athletic clubs in junior high schools and high schools because "desirable" in defined from an individual perspective. Last year, we attempted to clarify how members of school athletic clubs defined "desirable" athletic clubs by surveying members of athletic clubs in junior high and high schools. According to the results of this survey, junior high school and high school students thought that important criteria for a desirable school
athletic club should include "human relationships" and "self-development". They also thought that the ideal school athletic club should be governed by student consensus.
This year, we attempted to clarify evaluations and opinions about "desirable" school athletic clubs from the perspective of 218 students majoring in Sports Science who probably members of desirable athletic clubs in their schools.
Generally speaking, junior high school students enter and continue to participate in school athletic clubs because they like the club. This is very simple reason and it is hoped that "desirable" school athletic clubs include good human relationships with club members and good leaders or coaches who support students in building physical strength and learning that they can achieve anything with patience. Gaining confidence in their own ability and spending suhstantial time in club activities and practice are very important criterias for "desirable" school athletic clubs and these will become the driving force of the students future actions.
Basically, "desirable" athletic clubs in high school and junior high school are the same however,we need to add another particular dimension to athletic clubs in high school. Beating rival teams is an important goal of activities in high school and this is very unique. Both students and coaches believe that hard practice makes perfect. So, it is hoped that leaders have the ability to guide students on the right path to build good athletic records and to advise them on ways to improve their skills. In high school athletic clubs, it is natural that teachers and coaches tend to interfere with daily activities and practice. However, compared with junior high school, we need more voluntary
