ABSTRACT
Korea Martime University (KMU), founded on Nov. 5 1945, has long been involved in
maritime education and training (MET) to meet the needs of the Korean Merchant Marine and
provided expertise for the wider marine-related activities in the country.
With the rapidly changing technology of maritime transport and cargo handing and the
reorganisation of international transport systems, there have been growing concernsd in
the fields of safety of life at sea, marine pollution, etc among the countries which have
merchant fleets in the world.
The International Mritime Organisation(IMO) has long played a key role in improving
maritime safety, and in the prevention of pollution and related fields. Last year the IMO
adopted a new STCW Convention which is scheduled to be in effect in early 1997. The new
STCW Convention has been changed in many respects compared to the existing one and is
expected to influence Korea Maritime University in terms of curriculum and the educational
system.
In this paper the latest developments in maritime education and training (MET) of the
College of Maritime Sciences at Korea Maritime University will be descriptively mentioned
to respond to the new STCW Convention. |
