ESTABLISMENT OF A REGIONAL MARITIME

ACADEMY IN THE BIMP-EAGA REGION

AUGUSTO U. ESCOLANO

Abstract

Maintaining the Filipino seafarers competitive edge is primarily anchored on sustaining a pool of highly qualified Filipino seafarers that meet international standards and industry demand. The Filipino seafarer's efficiency and competence are the results of organized programmes that commence in the classrooms of maritime institutions in the Philippines and are sustained long after the seafarers have left their classrooms.

The Newly Industrialized Economies of Asia are unwaveringly recording an increase in demand growth and this process of industrialization is expected to be inherited by the other countries of Asia. This will result in an increase in demand for ships and seafarers to man these ships.

The BIMP-EAGA region is proliferating growth and development. The economic and industrial tide has already reached this region, therefore maritime manpower development is essential. Raw materials, finished products and passengers will have to be transported via sea, so there was a felt need for the establishment of a Regional Maritime Academy. This is just a step in the realization of a dream for the region.
