5. CONCLUSIONS

The continuous development of marine industry needs a better training from those who cater for it. This training may take place in an academic establishment that is able to grant its graduates both an engineering diploma and the 3rd officer certificate.

In some circumstances post university studies become necessary.

Although the students of the merchant marine institutes have a peculiar training they are part of the university milieu and, therefore, the rigours of the military discipline are no longer needed.

There is a growing need of personnel with seamanship training for the on-shore activities. There is also a continuous transfer of personnel between the off-shore and on-shore activities. For this reason the academic training of the naval officers becomes imperative. From this point of view a double specialization obviously gives the applicants more opportunities.

We think that the large number of candidates that apply for the entrance examination in the Merchant Marine Institute of Constanta, strengthens our belief that the granting of an engineering diploma and 3rd officer certificate is beneficial both from the point of view of a higher education and of the opportunity to find a proper job.
