Information being integrated is displayed in a specific style based on
the rule. Meaning of the display increases with progress of the processing level. To be
able to get information correctly and use it correctly is a necessary ability for an
operator.
In the case of graphic style displays, it is necessary to consider the
accuracy and the resolution of CRT.
3.2 Training Corresponding to Modernized Bridge System
According to the experience from the simulator training of RADAR
system, we can recognize that a simulator training is effective to master a machine
system. It is also desirable to use the ship handling simulator which can simulate real
ship environment. Because an operator on board can understand his situation through
comparing results of the IBS processing and visual information. He would not decide his
action depending only on the system information.
3.2.1 Basic training in classrooms
As a matter of course, it is not reasonable to make all trainings for
IBS on simulators. Following basic knowledge should be learned in classrooms in addition
to the knowledge required for conventional ship operation.
knowledge of computer system
sensor characteristics
processing methods in IBS
display characteristics
3.2.2 Training for IBS on ship handling simulator
The simulator training is suitable to study operation procedures. As
there are many kinds of procedures, we discuss some of the items as follows.
○ IBS operation
The main functions of IBS are navigation planning, ship's positioning,
automatic tracking maneuver, maneuvers for collision avoiding and berthing. When an
operator selects a function, he gets several types of support. The way of support changes
depending on which support item is selected. Training must be done to cover the following
abilities.
selection of support items from menu
understanding of support items
usage of information
○ Handling using IBS
A Joy-stick type controller is used for a berthing maneuver in IBS.
When an operator handles the lever to make a parallel shift or turn, IBS calculates
necessary power of each actuator and drives them. In the case of conventional ships, an
operator controls a wheel, engine revolution, propeller pitch and output of side thrusters
respectively. It is a very difficult maneuver even for an experienced operator, which
requires decision making on distribution of each power of actuators while measuring
