5.4 Comparison of Systems

For comparison purposes, some relevant information about the three types of "Transponder" systems are included in Table 2 (operational aspects) and Table 3 (technical aspects).

 

It is obvious from the quoted parameters that the STDMA "Transponder" due to its signifcantly higher capacity is superior in performance and can be used as a powerful multi-purpose tool able to fulfill the requirements of both ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore use. At the time being, the DSC transponder is easier to achieve - however with limited operational functions. Both are in severe competion concerning international carriage requirements, whereas mobile transponders are limited to local / regional use.
