In conclusion, whilst the amended STCW Convention may appear somewhat daunting to those charged with the task of implementing the new changes, careful planning and organisation will overcome many of the perceived problems. Additional resources may be needed either from within the National framework, or through the IMO itself, but in preparing existing MET systems to cope with the new standards, institutions should not overlook new teaching and training methods and technology which could be used effectively to meet the specified competence criteria and thus achieve the major objective of the revised Convention of raising both the standards and quality of training and assessment.
