and show that it can contribute more than today to "safer shipping and cleaner oceans" and the efficiency of shipping. It should meet the requirements of STCW 95 first and should then seek a closer involvement in maritime affairs by offering required specialized training, consultancy and research services.

These new requirements can only be met by staff at MET institutes who are both willing and able. At present, the willingness can be doubted at quite a number of MET institutes but also the ability is not always existent. However, there are the graduates of WMU. They are educated and trained in knowledge, skills and attitudes for increasing and extending the activities of MET. They are open to, and experienced in, cooperation. They are prepared to share knowledge and experience.

Such cooperation between MET staff can become a major factor for reaching common as well as specific goals.

MET institutes must get going for fulfilling the requirements of STCW 95 that provides them with an impetus and a golden opportunity for taking a more active and important role in the maritime field. It is now or never.

MET-vade! MET-go! MET-get going!
