In order to ensure safer shipping, it is important to harmonize the training of seafarers with the developments in technology and new operational techniques.

In view of the recent manning trends in fleets, it is essential that seafarers are trained in both communication techniques and human relationships.

During this six days session, I anticipate that each participant will acquire some considerable knowledge through the various presentations, lively discussion and an exchange of information on the use of advanced technology in Maritime Education and Training and we will build a network of friendships enabling better communication in the future.

Finally, I am sure that the IMLA will contribute greatly in helping to achieve IMO's motto of "Safer shipping and cleaner oceans" by the implementation of effective Maritime Education and Training in the future.
