造船特有の技能である「撓鉄」作業の第一人者として、職場での撓鉄の技能工育成に努めるとともに、高齢化が進み技能伝承が危ぶまれている撓鉄作業の「技能伝承マニュアル」の作成に協力するなど、惜しみなく自らの技能を提供し、撓鉄技能の伝承に貢献されている。

As the leading authority on steel bending, a shipbuilding technique, the awardee trains skilled workers in the workplace. Mr. Yoshifusa Ikemoto is also helping to transfer the technique, which is endangered as skilled workers grow old, by compiling a Technique Transfer Manual for steel bending work.

池本さんは昭和61年広島の造船所に入社、現在、撓鉄作業の第一人者として活躍している。
「撓鉄」とは、熱した鋼板を水で冷やして収縮させることにより曲げる作業で、造船特有の技能である。船の船首部および船尾部の曲面は、この撓鉄作業で曲げられた鋼板を張り合わせて作られる。1960年代後半に省エネの一環として、抵抗を減らすため船首バルバスバウ（突起部分）が取り入れられ、その加工技術として撓鉄が重要視されるようになった。
「撓鉄」は経験と勘にたよる作業であり、口頭で教えることは難しい。まさに職人技の世界であり、一人前になるには多年の経験が必要とされる。撓鉄の第一人者と呼ばれる人は、1枚の鋼板を「このように曲げればこのような形になる」ということを感覚的に想像できる人である。新人は見よう見まねで繰り返し練習する以外に技能修得の道はない。真夏の炎天下、鋼板を熱する作業は非常に厳しく、辞めてゆく人も多い。池本氏の撓鉄の技術は平素からの努力と探求心の賜物である。それが部下の指導にも生かされ、信頼を得ている。池本さんは高齢化が進み技能伝承が危ぶまれている撓鉄作業の「技能伝承マニュアル」とビデオ作成に協力するなど、惜しみなく自らの技能を提供し、技能伝承に協力している。
受賞の言葉
「撓鉄」は、平たい鋼板を焼いて、いろいろな曲がり形状にする作業であり、造船特有の技能で「匠の技」のひとつになっています。今後、この賞に恥じないよう、撓鉄作業における技術向上と技能伝承に邁進する所存です。
