Research on ground liquefaction/deformation induced by waves and on the countermeasures to/utilizations of those characteristics 4 4 Marine Environment and Engineering Department Elucidates the ground liquefaction induced by waves considering the interaction among wave, structure and ground to develop countermeasures and the utilization based on the above elucidation.
2. Research on the generation mechanism of long period waves and on the countermeasures against them in bay and coastal areas 4 2 Marine Environment and Engineering Department Elucidates the overall image of long period waves. Improves the loading safety in bay areas. Mitigates flood disaster in coastal areas.
3. Research on the establishment of an underwater operating machine system using the bilateral control operation 4 2 Construction and Control Systems Department Constructs system design of the remotely controlled operating machine with high performance ability.
4. Research on the development of a data-oriented wave estimation method connected to NOWPHAS 4 1 Marine
Environment and Engineering Department
Develops a wave estimation method connected to the field observation data obtained from the nationwide ocean wave information network for ports and harbors(NOWPHAS)
5. Research on the improvement of performance evaluation techniques for structures in ports and airports 4 1 Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Department Conducts experiments and analyses factors related to the evaluation system of port and airport structures considering the life cycle.

1. Research on the fluid mechanics of the ocean 3 3    
(1) Research on the interaction between air and seawater 3 3 Marine Environment and Engineering Department (1) Analyzes the wave characteristics in Japanese coastal areas using the accurate wave estimation method. Develops a wave estimation method considering enclosed-bay wind and tidal waves. Conducts numerical experiments of the probability model of typhoons.
(2) Research on the hydro dynamics in enclosed bay areas 3 3   (2) Develops a numerical method of hydro dynamics considering three-dimensional characteristics.
2. Research on ocean waves     Marine Environment and Engineering Department  
(1) Research on the long period waves in coastal areas 3 3 (1) Elucidates the characteristics of long period waves in coastal areas and develops countermeasures to long period waves.
(2) Research on overtopping wave disasters in coastal areas 3 2   (2) Estimates the relation of time and overtopping wave flow considering drainage capacity. Establishes design settlement of the allowable overtopping wave flow.
3. Research on marine structure     Marine Environment and Engineering Department  
(1) Research on the structure controlling sea areas 3 3 (1) Utilizes the high-level compound breakwater practically.
(2) Research on probability design of the compound breakwater 3 3   (2) Constructs performance design of the compound breakwater considering deformation level.
(3) Research on ground liquefaction/deformation induced by waves and on countermeasures to/utilizations of the characteristics 4 4   (3) Conducts large-scale experiments on ground liquefaction.
(4) Research on applications of the numerical wave channel to the design of wave resistance 3 2   (4) Develops impulsive wave force calculation program using VOF method.
4. Research on the water quality and ecological system in coastal areas     Marine Environment and Engineering Department  
(1) Research on environmental restoration utilizing biological functions 3 3   (1) Investigates the circulation of sediments on tidal flats and on the coupling of the seafloor system and floating system.
(2) Research on the application of experimental ecological methods 3 3   (2) Engages in technical development of the event driven experiment using the tidal flat experiment facility.
(3) Research on water quality control in wide areas 4 2   (3) Conducts field surveys on the water quality and ecological system in enclosed bay areas. Investigates the weather variation and population dynamics. Analyzes the behavior of the oxygen contained in water. Conducts field surveys on the pollution caused by harmful chemical matter in coastal areas.
5. Research on the characteristics and information of sea conditions 3 2 Marine Environment and Engineering Department  
(1) Development of an observation method of coastal sea conditions 3 2   (1) Improves the long-term stability of air-jet type tide meters and develops the data analysis method.
(2) Research on the management of observed information on coastal sea conditions 3 2   (2) Observes the weather and sea conditions in Ashika island and other areas. Establishes a basic data book on coastal waves, long period waves and tidal heights.
6. Research on the utilization and exploitation of the ocean 3 3 Marine Environment and Engineering Department  
(1) Research on the safe utilization of coasts and harbors 3 3   (1) Conducts surveys on safety in marine public recreation.
(2) Exploitation of the clean energy in coastal areas 3 2   (2) Characterizes wind power energy on seas.
7. Research on the marine structure in deep sea     Geotechnical and Structural Engineering Department  
(1) Research on the mooring system of floating marine structures 3 2   (1) Conducts proto-type experiments using the Mega Float structure and fluid mechanics tests using scaled models.
(2) Research on the safety of marine structures in deep sea 3 2   (2) Conducts surveys on the efficiency of container handling in external berthing facilities and safety evaluation of floating mooring facilities.
