Constructs trial design of vertical axis type windmill and its air dynamic performance experiment. Calculates determination of optimum design for floating structure with low-level movement. Reconstructs analyzing tools for solid floating structure + mooring system. Selects and introduces pre/post processor.
9. Investigation of status quo of research on ocean development and sea ice technology 4 1 ODRF Collects related literature and participates in symposiums, committees and other meetings.
Environment and Energy Research Field        
1. Fundamental research on fish robots and their power source 3   EERF @
Attempts to increase performance of Stirling engine by improving driving mechanism and heat exchanger. Advances performance analysis of new type external combustion engine.
2. Fundamental research on low environmental burden burner for next generation marine gas turbine 4 2 EERF Conducts experiments of dilute gas pre-mixed burner to determine its burning characteristics. Performs simulating calculation of pre-mixed gas. Investigates experimentally density distribution of pre-mixed gas. Investigates literature on low environmental burden type burning.
3. Research on simultaneous reduction of NOX and PM from exhaust gas from marine engine 4 2 EERF For computer controlled engine, investigates possibility of realization of inner EGR outside from fixed optimum burning region, and also investigates possibility of Miller Cycle. Grade C heavy oil is used for operation. Investigates issues for realization of PM measuring system using newly developed diluter. Clarifies exhaust PM characteristics from small engines using various fuels. Measures exhaust NOX from ships.
4. Research on contaminating chemical materials exhausted from ships 3 2 EERF MSRF Conducts model cargo tank experiments to estimate amount of pollution during transportation of chemical materials. Calculation model to be constructed. Conducts static dissolution test of separated coating film from tar epoxy resin paint. Also conducts dynamic dissolution test of coating film on glass plate. Obtains luminescence spectrum of high viscosity oil using streak cameras, and also obtains data on laser ray propagation using atmospheric lidar.
5. Fundamental research on pulsating thermal flow characteristics 3 2 EERF Experimental studies on pulsating thermal flow characteristics: Clarifies influence of various parameters on vortex generation and thermal conductivity characteristics, through visualization of flow by PTV method and also through data analysis of thermal conductivity experiments. Numerical analysis of pulsating flow: Analytically clarifies pulsating flow characteristics based on numerical analysis of the same pulsating flow system used in the flow visualization experiment. Parameters at analysis are pulsating frequency, pulsating amplitude and so forth.
6. Research on radiation shielding technology and data standardization 5 2 EERF Evaluates and standardizes the calculation method concerning streaming and its database using the benchmark problem technique. Also evaluates supporting tools for 2-dim Sn calculation code from the perspective of standardization.
7. Investigation of research and development trends concerning marine environment problems 3 2 EERF ATRF ODRF (1) Investigates status quo of marine environmental research in Japan and in foreign countries to select research subjects to be commenced immediately. Creates case studies to decide research projects on environmental problems including exhaust gas from marine engines, paint coating, bilge water, spilled oil, global environmental problems including CO2 control, scrapping and reuse of ships, instrumentation of chemical material measurement, simulation technology of contamination material spreading etc. Determines which research groups are responsible and what research is to be conducted for those problems such as LCA, ship scrapping, oil pollution, ballast water, marine remote sensing and exhaust gas from marine engines.
8. Research on improvement of marine engine's reliability and rationalization of inspection 3 1 EERF Builds database of information concerning marine engines' reliability obtained at inspection. Discusses method to analyze and evaluate data stored as database. Investigates, through questionnaire, high-speed marine engine problems in high-speed craft. (4) Investigates working condition of problematic high-speed engines. Also discusses evaluation method of safety through analysis of problem generating mechanism. (5) Investigates fuel characteristics based on the relation between attached soot amount and burning time.
9. Research on standards for marine environmental facilities and instruments 3 1 EERF MSRF OB Collects information on ballast water. Attempts to construct a purification unit of water processed by an oil-water separator. Discusses oil density monitoring method. Conducts experiments to minimize tank washing water. Discusses applicability of oil splashing paint to spilled oil recovering instruments.
10. Fundamental research on evaluation method of environmental influence due to CO2 storage on deep sea bed 3 1 EER MSRF ATRF OB (1) Investigation of evaluation method of environmental influence based on model experiments using two different sized deep sea monitoring apparatuses: In still water experiments measures thickness of the CO2 hydrate covering layer, melting out amount of stored CO2. Similarity principle to be verified. (2) Investigations of evaluation method of environmental effects based on marine ecological system research: Investigates the evaluation method in cooperation with Tokyo Fishery University, National Environment Research Institute and so forth.
11. Research on marine oil pollution prevention, based on Japan France cooperative research program 3 3 EERF Investigates French status quo of oil recovering vessel development.Condacts detailed investigation of research objects of SEDORE Research Institute, using its research results on ship casualties. Selects cooperative research themes concerning monitoting technology, based on investigations of the status quo of both countries.
Osaka Branch        
1. Research on safety evaluation of ship's piping system 3 3 OB Precisely evaluates valve stress data obtained by experiments applying vapor pressure to piping system. Conducts strength experiment of marine instruments, for which standardization is to be demanded by users. Also analyzes, at bulb makers' request, flow within the piping system. Conducts flow characteristic experiments of the piping system including double non-reverse flow bulbs to decrease chattering phenomenon in bulbs.
2. Research on improvement of reliability and effectiveness of marine facilities 3 2 OB EERF (1) (2) Clarifies electric field measuring conditions close to radar frequency. Observes behavior of CO2 hydrate balls dropping from CO2 release apparatus with diameter of 0.12 m. Prepares for establishment of a cooperative research regime, by collecting materials relating to it.
3. Fundamental research on ship transportation system within regional rivers 2 2 OB (1) Conducts optimum design of newly developed and patent applied methods for ship navigation facilities under low bridge girders. (2) Presents outlines of synthetic river ship transportation system.
4. Research concerning small crafts' higher safety, low cost and emission 3 2 OB Develops operating program to cut out 3-dim surface of plate edge using CAD data. Computer simulation of this to be developed. Offers proposals for production process control methods intended to reduce environmental burden and recycle methods effective for it, based on given CO2 distribution. Evaluates mezzo-scale strength of adhesive joint parts, such as steel vs. resin and glass fiber vs. resin. Evaluates strength and endurance characteristics of ABS resin cut out from real ships or newly molded.
5. Research on vibration and noise reduction of marine machinery 3 2 OB EERF Investigates vibration and noise in tug boat machinery. Selects elements effective for eliminating low frequency noise by muffler using newly developed low frequency sound generator.
