Future new work item proposals of ISO/TC 8/SC 6
Secretary of TC 8/SC 6 is pleased to notify that NWPs of the under-mentioned items are now being prepared by Japan and will be submitted to P-members of SC 6 for voting upon completion of the drafts of the standards.
1. Items requested by CEN (European Committee for Standardization)
In accordance with the request by CEN (please see Annex A), TC 8/SC 6 accepted to undertake the development of ISO standards for the following items:
(1)Rate of turn indicators
(2)Propeller pitch indicator
(3)Rudder angle indicator
(4)Propeller shaft revolution indicator
2. Unification of the ISO standards of magnetic compasses
Regarding magnetic compasses. ISO currently have four (4) standards concerning its "performance" and "test and certification" by dividing into Class A and B (ISO 449, ISO 2269, ISO 613 and ISO 10316) and one (1) standard concerning its positioning (ISO 694). In the meantime, related SOLAS provisions were revised in July 2002 and therefore the said ISO standards have to be revised to coincide with SOLAS.
Under such circumstances, Secretary of SC 6 has received proposal from Prof.
Suzuki, Convenor of SC6/WG3, for unifying the existing ISO standards at this occasion. ( please
see Annex C)

Subject: Initiation of standardization work at ISO level "Rudder angle, rpm, pitch indicator" and on "rate of turn indicator" for the support of the Revised Annexes A.1 + A.2 to Directive 96/98/EC
Dear Sir,
During the meeting of the 16th of January 2001 of the working party of the Committee set up under Article 12 of Council Directive 93/75/EEC, the Member States of the European Union expressed the need to have available an International Standard on the 2 following subjects;
- "Rudder angle, rpm, pitch indicator"
- "Rate of turn indicators"
Initially, we thought that CENELEC (or IEC) would be the appropriate standardization body to develop those documents. We discovered later that the experts of IEC were suggesting ISO/TC 8 SC 6 as the ad hoc body to work on those standards.
We know that JIS standards exist already on two of the above-referred subjects
(i.e. Rudder angle indicators (JIS F 8522: Shipbuilding - Electric rudder angle indicator) and Engine RPM indicators (JIS F 7002: Ships - Tachometer for engine))
You will find also enclosed a document produced by DNV and facilitating the certification of those types of products. I am sure there will be other contribution from other classification societies.
To our knowledge there are no reference technical document supporting IMO Res-A.526(13) (Rate of turn Indicators).
