First Japanese-Built Unit of World's Largest Class New Type Mitsui-MAN B&W 10K98MC Type Diesel Completed
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) recently completed its first unit of the new Mitsui-MAN B&W 10K98MC type diesel, one of the largest diesel engines in the world. Its shop trial has also been completed successfully.
The K98MC type is the latest high-efficiency diesel engine developed by MAN B&W Diesel of Denmark to meet the trend to prefer increasingly large containerships. With its cylinders of large 980 mm in bore size, the largest in the world, the engine develops a per-cylinder output of as much as 7,780 PS (5,720kW). The recently completed K98MC unit was installed in a 5,500- TEU class large containership.
The K98MC type diesel, capitalizing on the performance records of earlier MC and MC-C type engines, uses three slide type fuel valves, effectively contributing to NOx reduction as well, to enhance its performance, functions and reliability. It features a high topland and Oros shape piston top combustion chamber, a twin staybolt design, which is a standard aspect of the MC-C type for through bolts, main bearings of a thin shell with white metal type, and uneven firing angles to reduce vibration.

Since it entered into a technical license agreement with B&W in 1926, MES has built up a significant diesel engine manufacturing record as the world's leading diesel builder. In 2000, MES became the first diesel manufacturer to achieve an aggregate power output of 37 million PS (27.2 million kW), the top record for any single engine make, and is now adding more to this achievement. Having built six ultra-large engines including the recently completed 10K98MC unit, the company is expected to mark an all- time annual record of 2.3 million PS (1.7 million kW) in fiscal 2001.
