KOREAN LARYNGECTOMEES FEDERATION REPORT 2000
INTRODUCTION
The Korean Laryngectomees Federation (KLF)was formed in 1978 by patients who had underwent total laryngectomy.
Currently the listed members are 1386 and active members are around 600.
In 2000, 23 members passed away (reports showed) and 98 were registered as new members as of now.
The main objectives of the KLF are as follows: To promote the concept of self and mutual help among laryngectomees To encourage to learn vocalization again To publish and distribute print materials concerning the rehabilitation of vocalization.
ATIVITIES
1.Speech rehabilitation. (Esophageal voice)
9 regular speech rehabilitation classes were held throughout the year and opened twice or thrice a week under the conduction of specially trained teachers.
The average attendance for each session was 15-20
To keep up with the continually changing times of modern society, a certain club modified it's educational content into not only esophageal vocalization but also, computer work (basic course) and other video-education.
2.New model of electric larynx in Korea (Evada).
The market and sales situation of new type of E.L. which Yonsei Eye & Ear center had developed will be delayed till 2002 because of the domestic economics.
3.Speaking contest.
A nation-wide speaking contest for laryngectomee is scheduled this May at Taeku city under the support of the Kyoungnam New Voice Club.
4.Cooperative purchase.
The club has negotiated on the behalf of the members to buy various domestic or foreign equipments for speech rehabilitation and health at reasonable price in the year of 2000.
5.General Health Care.
Once a month, members of clubs gather for medical and personal counselling.
Otclargngologist and Internist give lecture to laryngectomee on general health care.
6.Antismoking campaign.
In cooperation with Korean Association of Smoking and Health, KLF will conduct powerful antismoking campaign to reduce incidence of the laryngeal cancer.
Accually, smoking will be prohibited at public place by law on and after this July 1 in Korea.
