Seminar on The Mass Transit Development Strategy in Ho Chi Minh City

 

A seminar that primarily aims to generate a common understanding among relevant officials of the need for mass transit in HCMC will be held on October 16 at New World Saigon Hotel. Jointly organized by the Japan Transport Cooperation Association (JTCA) and the Transport Development and Study Center in the South with the cosponsorship of Vietnam's Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the HCMC People's Committee, the seminar will focus on the mass transit development strategy for HCMC.

About 80 representatives of various government agencies such as the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Vietnam Railway, HCMC's Chief Architect's Office and Transport and Public Works Department, and Transport Development and Study Center in the South will attend the seminar. Also expected to participate are Vice Minister Nguyen Viet Tien of the MOT, Vice Chairman Vu Hong Viet of the HCMC People's Committee, Consul General Wataru Hayashi of Japan's consulate, and other Japanese organizations.

Below are details of the seminar:

 

1. Scope of Work

(1) To present the current situation of public transport in HCMC and to identify its weaknesses.

(2) To share the experience of other countries including Japan on mass transit development.

(3) To review the formulated/conducted plans/studies related to mass transit development in HCMC and their progress.

 

2. Main Activities

(1) Keynote speech: Strategies for Urban Rail Development (Prof.Hitoshi Ieda, University of Tokyo)

(2) Report: Guidelines on Mass Transit System Development in HCMC based on Other Countries' Experiences (Dr.Shizuo Iwata, ALMEC Corporation)

(3) Panel discussion among relevant Vietnamese agencies and open forum among seminar participants
