Japanese Shipyards and Marine Equipment Manufacturers Set up Joint Venture For Electronic Exchange of Design/Technical Infomation
The Japanese Marine Equipment Association (JSMEA) and The Shipbuilders' Association of Japan (SAJ) have agreed to set up in March 2001 ZoHaku Web Limited, a joint company to operate design and technical information exchange service utilizing the Internet, and to let the new firm launch its business in April 2001.
■Objectives of the joint venture:
To make available an environment for smooth exchange of design and technical information for use by about 100 Japanese companies at the time of starting the service. In the farther future, the new company is intended to become a portal site for maritime business, including electronic commerce.
■Activities:
1. Preparation and maintenance of an information expression protocol regarding design and technical information on marine machinery.
2. Operation and functional enhancement of the information exchange system.
3. Supply of user-support services including help desk and education.
JETRO Sydney Closes down Ship Machinery Department
The Ship Machinery Department at JETRO, sydney, whose opening was reported in No.69 of Jsmea News, was closed down at the end of June 2000 after 32 years and eight months of important contributions to bridging Japan and Australia since its inauguration in November 1967.

JETRO Shanghai Center Opens Ship Machinery Department
The Ship Machinery Department was established within the JETRO Shanghai Center (in the People's Republic of China) on October 1, 2000. Mr.Tsutomu Akita took office as the first director of the new department.
