Development of V22HLX Type Engine and Meeting IMO's Requirement for NOx Control

As the latest model of the HLX series of medium-speed engines with proven reliability and economy as marine main engines and generator engines for land, the V22HLX type diesel has been developed by Niigata Engineering Co., Ltd.

The new model is a V-type version of the earlier L22HLX type, developed with targets of 10 m/s in mean piston speed and 2.44 MPa in brake mean effective pressure. It is enhanced in reliability while achieving high performance and easy maintenance. The table lists the main particulars of the V22HLX engine, and the photo shows an external view of the 16V22HLX model.

Beginning with the V34HLX type engine (340 mm in cylinder bore and 500 mm in piston stroke), a number of new medium-speed series have been developed, including V28HLX (280 mm in cylinder bore and 400 mm in piston stroke), L28HLX and L22HLX, now joined by the V22HLX type to cover a power output range of 1,392 to 9,990 kW. These engines have proved satisfactory in actual service, 34HLX having operated for about 7,500 hours, 28HLX for about 7,000 hours, and L22HLX for about 1,000 hours, by June 2000. Niigata has a cooperative arrangement with General Electric (GE) of the United States for the marketing of 13 types of diesel engines of this series and to be responsive to servicing needs in an extensive geographical area.

Niigata has long been committed to environmental conservation through NOx reduction. The company's de-NOx technology has been appreciated, and its 32CLX series (320 mm in cylinder bore and 420 mm in piston stroke) has won the first IMO NOx certificate for in Japan group of engines (276-368 kW/cyl, E2, E3 and D1 modes). Further granting of IMO NOx certificates are successively granted for the 41HX (410 mm in cylinder bore, 560 mm in piston stroke, and 490-736 kW/cyl), 28BT (260 mm in cylinder bore, 480 mm in piston stroke, and 147-172 kW/cyl) and 31 BT (340 mm in cylinder bore, 620 mm in piston stroke, and 196-221 kW/cyl) type engines in the E2 and E3 modes.
