AP227 1st Editionでは、3次元プラント設計における配管設計に重点をおいており、配管の物理的、機能的特性、スペックへの参照、流体設計等をスコープとしている。一方2nd Editionでは、New Work Itemとして以下の内容がスコープとなる予定である。
for the representation and exchange of piping configurations and properties specific to support fabrication and inspection of piping assembled in a shop and the installation of the fabricated piping.
investigate extending the AP227 support for infomation about HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) components and systems and adding refinements to make AP 227 more useful to the general building and shipbuilding industries.

ESTEPプロジェクトでは、AP227 2nd Editionの実証のために以下のベンダーがトランスレータの開発を行う。
Intergraph：NAVSEA、Avondale向けISDP/GSCAD用トランスレータ
Atlantec：NASSCO向けTRIBON用トランスレータ
Dassault：EB、Ingalls向けCATIAトランスレータ
AP227 2nd Editionのスケジュールは以下の通り。
NWIのISO承認：完了
ARMの開発：2000年10月11〜13日のワークショツプで完成
AlMの開発が完了：2001年1月
CD ballot：2001年3月
