Diesel Engine

LA 34 Type Low Speed Four Stroke Diesel Engine

Committed to the development and manufacture of long stroke types of low speed four stroke diesel engines for two decades, The Hanshin Diesel Works, Ltd. has attempted further elongation of the piston stroke, and successfully developed the LA 34 type with a bore/stroke ratio of 2.12, the largest in the world for trunk piston type diesels, and a maximum continuous output of 1,838 kW (2,500 PS).

The new model satisfies the IMO's requirement for NOx emission control effective from 2000 onward, is further improved in fuel saving through the enhancement of cycle efficiency with the lengthened piston stroke, and keeps the engine revolution speed low as it directly turns the propeller without using a reduction gear in-between. Its maintenance is facilitated and extended in intervals, and both vibration and noise are reduced.

The engine has a box structure integrating the cylinders and cam housing, thereby increased in rigidity and suppressed in vibration and noise.

Each piston is provided with a high topland type crown, and the top of the cylinder liner is fitted with an L save ring to prevent hard carbon from sticking to the topland and thereby to reduce the consumption of lubricating oil.

Special piston rings are used to optimize the pressure on each ring.

The cylinder liners are treated by the tufftriding process, and undergo bore cooling to optimize the temperature along the inner circumference at the top, where the aforementioned L save rings are provided.

One each of air intake and exhaust valves is provided, equipped with a valve box to facilitate maintenance and inspection, and both are rotated to enhance durability and extend maintenance intervals. The exhaust valve is made of a special alloy. The intake and exhaust valves are hydraulically driven to reduce noise.

Fully stable in performance since immediately after development, this type engine is expected by its manufacturer to fully satisfy the requirements of the clients.
