VLCC M/T "Osprey" Christened and Delivered
A ceremony to christen and deliver the 301,963 DWT (metric) double hull tanker M/T "Osprey" to its owner SAMOCO took place with a large attendance of well wishers on January 14, 1999 at the Yokosuka shipyard of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. (SHI).
The VLCC is now operated by Mobil Shipping and Transportation Company, a subsidiary of U.S. oil giant Mobil Oil Corp.
In celebration of the delivery of the vessel, its godmother, many other distinguished guests, and the senior executive vice president of SHI, planted a tree in the Mobil Garden within the shipyard site. Trees are donated by Mobil as a long established custom to symbolize the friendship between Mobil and Sumitomo and to commemorate the christening and delivery of tankers. The recently delivered tanker was the 14th vessel delivered, and the planted tree, the 14th of the series.
The M/T "Osprey," succeeding the concept embodied in the previously delivered M/T "Eagle" (in 1993) and M/T "Raven" (in 1996), has state-of-the-art equipments.
