Outline of the national transportation system
･ Lao PDR is landlocked
･ Surrounded by five neighbouring countries, common borders of 6,080 km.
･ Topography is rugged and hilly
･ The aim of the government:
change the country from landlocked to land-linked.
Road network:
･ Total 21,627, 17% paved.
･ National roads 6,442 km, of which 3032 km are paved
･ Provincial roads 7136 km of which 117 km are paved
･ Local roads or tracks 8000 km are mainly earth surfaced, in substandard condition.
Great demand of travelling is looming beneath the surface.
Institutional administration:
･ The Communications Department (CD) of Ministry of Communication, Transport, Post and Construction (MCTPC): the administration of national and provincial roads.
･ The actual responsibility for all routine and periodic maintenance has been delegated to MCTPC's provincial departments.
