The picture above represents a continuum of fear based on ignorance. The building on the upper left is representative of institutions or villages that provide shelter for persons with HD. The home on the right represents community living. The block in the middle represents the discovery of MDT (Multiple Drug Therapy) and education efforts.

The bell shape curve you now see on the screen is how society's fear of leprosy gave rise to the building of segregated settings. The down slope is what is now happening. The physical structures are either being abandoned or no longer being built. However, the fear and ignorance continues. Today, we have over 80 individuals from 13 different countries previously treated for leprosy. It pains me to see that even in this Congress my "brothers and sisters" are stared at in dismay.
