(7) As you study esophageal speech with the other students, you will make friends. A good rival may appear among them and make practice a pleasure rather than a pain. You will find your life increasingly worthwhile as your speech progresses.

8. Encouraging Beginners to Vocalize

Encouraging beginners to vocalize requires that you familiarize yourself with their characters, e.g., active or passive, by observing their attitude and behavior before practice starts.

First, one student may be able to produce sound much earlier than the others after repeating swallowing and injection, possibly produce the basic sound with ease. Give the following advice:

"You've experienced sniffing with your lips closed, haven't you? Try to remember it and say 'ah' after sniffing." An alternative would be, "Open your mouth wide, take a big mouthful of air, and then try to say 'ah'."

Show how to vocalize time and time again.

Once a student can produce the basic sound "ah" using this method of air-intake, it will help in inhalation, and further progress can soon be expected. Constantly provide encouragement and praise.
