Participants
(16 in each city)
Criteria: Individuals who:
−are unable to see signals, crosswalk lines, poles, or curbs; but
−do cross streets independently using a long cane or dog guide
Experimental Task
・Participants were instructed to approach and cross the street in front of them, then turn and cross the street beside them
・Participants were instructed to use whatever techniques or strategies (including asking for assistance) that they would use if they needed to cross at an unfamiliar, complex, signalized intersection
Use of pushbutton
(Portland & Charlotte)
・Portland‐participants looked for, found, and pushed the button on only 16% of trials where use of the pushbutton was required to get a WALK signal timing.
・Charlotte‐No participant ever looked for, found or pushed the button.
