IIW Annual Assembly 2004 in Osaka - a great success
The IIW Annual Assembly in the Japanese port of Osaka (the third-largest city in the country with 2.6 million inhabitants) on July 11 to 16, 2004 recorded a great success with participants from 41 countries. 619 participants had themselves registered by the day of the Opening Ceremony. 523 of them were delegates or experts and 96 companions. With 33 delegates and experts, Germany provided the second-largest delegation after Japan.
On Sunday, July 11. the General Assembly, the Opening Ceremony and the subsequent Reception formed the official start of the event. As every year, the IIW honours were awarded to deserving members within the framework of the Opening Ceremony. From a German viewpoint, two occurrences were particularly significant: The award which Prof. Dr.-Ing. D. von Hofe, the Chief Executive Director of the DVS, handed over to A. Tsuge, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., Japan, and the presentation of the Arthur Smith Award to Prof. Dr.-Ing. H. Wohlfahrt, Brunswick. The Organisation Committee had selected A. Tsuge to deliver the introductory Houdremont Lecture within the framework of the international conference entitled "Technical trends and future prospects of welding technology for transportation, land, sea, air and space". The IIW Technical Committee conferred upon Prof. Wohlfahrt the Arthur Smith Award for his many years of very successful collaboration in the IIW Commission XIII, "Fatigue of welded components and structures".
The sessions of the sixteen Technical Commissions on 12 to 14 July and of the other IIW bodies were well-visited without exception and the participants gave them very good marks concerning the subject-related contents. In addition to the Opening Ceremony, the Japanese Evening on Monday also provided an insight into Japanese culture and cuisine. From an historical viewpoint, the Osaka Castle which was built in the sixteenth century and was restored to its present form in 1931, is worthy of mention.
At the session of the German IIW Commission on 14 July, chaired by Prof. von Hofe, the 27 participating delegates, commission chairmen and experts also unanimously confirmed that the results of the IIW Annual Assembly 2004 were positive in every respect.
