5. MATHEMATICAL MODELLING
5.1 General.
 
 The availability of generic formulae expressing hydrodynamic forces and moments as functions of ship parameters and environmental characteristics is extremely practical for simulation purposes. A proposal is made for such a set of expressions, although it is clear that the validity range is limited to ships similar to those tested.
 
5.2 Effect of forward speed
 
 For each ship model, regression formulae were developed for the lateral force and yawing moment due to ship-bank interaction at zero propeller rate. As reported by Vantorre et al [11], satisfactory results were obtained with polynomial expressions of the non-dimensional Lateral ship-bank distance YB3, the Froude number Fn and the non-dimensional inverse gross under keel clearance T/(h-T):
