5 EXAMPLE FOR EVALUATION OF A SIMULATOR EXERCISE FOR COLLISION AVOIDANCE (ARPA)
5.1 Scenario description and objectives
According to the STCW requirements for collisions avoidance skills and ARPA use, a simulation exercise was designed with the following parameters shown in Table 1.
Table 1 Scenario design for collision avoidance exercise
Area of competency |
Radar plotting for situation assessment and decision finding,
perform collision avoidance manoeuvre acc. to COLREG |
objectives |
Determination of CPA / TCPA
Use of ARPA within COLREG Use of radar in substantial alteration of course to avoid collision Use of a relative plot to determine the alteration of course needed to achieve required CPA |
configuration |
Own ship container vsl (LOA217m)
Open sea area, daylight, no current, winds, sea state O and none precipitation; visibility < 2nm (heavy fog) |
Traffic situation |
Moderate (1-3 per minute) in north-and southbound traffic
separation scheme (TSS) English Channel, area W-Hinder |
duration |
Medium, approximate 45 min |
Event description |
For the own ship's collision risk (vessel crossing English
Channel at W-Hinder), the collision has been programmed for minute 25 with deep
draught vessel LAGENA and minute 31 with Tanker PATRIOT (approaching from North), |
|
The trainee has to solve the task with ARPA equipment. Subjects of assessment are:
・Correctness with regard to ARPA operation and professional use of the ARPA's trial manoeuvre function
・Collision avoidance actions in compliance with Rule 19 (COLREG).
