Mass Transit in Big Cities
●Big Cities like Hanoi and HCMC needs good urban rail transit system.
●However the urban rail transit system is expensive
・elevated railway: US$ 40-50 million/km
・subway: US$ 100 million & more
●The cities can afford to buy 2-3 lines (or 30-50 kms) at most in 20 years
Importance of Bus
●Future transport demand in 2015 for Hanoi and HCMC is roughly 9 million trips/day (pop. 3.2 million), and 18 million trips/day (pop. :8.4 million) respectively
●Urban rail transit can only accommodate 1-1.5 million trips/day
●The rest need to be met by other modes
Role of Urban Rail Transit
●Mitigating traffic congestions along the corridor; faster travel time and lower travel cost for urban rail passengers and less congestions for road users
●Guiding future urban growth of the cities
