私ども日本室内楽振興財団が第4回「大阪国際室内楽コンクール＆フェスタ」を開催できますことは、誠に喜ばしい限りであります。本コンクールは1993年から3年毎に大阪で開催しており、これまでに世界40ヵ国から延べ184団体、657名の方々にご参加を頂いております。そして優秀な成績を修めたグループは、その後、世界各地で演奏活動を行い高い評価を得ております。このような実績を踏まえ、本コンクールは、1997年より「国際音楽コンクール世界連盟」の会員となることができました。これもひとえに、本事業に関係する多くの皆様方のご支援、ご協力の賜物であり、改めて厚く御礼申し上げます。

　「大阪国際室内楽コンクール」は、第1部門と第2部門に分けて運営しております。第1部門は室内楽の原点とも言うべき弦楽四重奏を対象にしており、第2部門は今回はピアノ三重奏に焦点を絞っております。年齢制限があるコンクールの参加者は、課題曲の演奏を通してその楽曲を最高度に解釈するとともに、世界の若手の演奏水準を知り競い合うことによって互いに大きな刺激を受けることになるでしょう。このコンクールを契機として将来、若手演奏家の皆さんが更に大きく飛躍されることを期待しております。

　一方、「大阪国際室内楽フェスタ」は年齢制限や課題曲のないコンクールであり、楽器の種類も自由です。このため、西洋のクラシック音楽はもとより、世界各国の伝統音楽民族音楽も対象にしています。約100名の一般聴衆による審査は、従来のコンクールには見られない大変ユニークなものであり、国際的にも注目を浴びております。フェスタ参加者は、自分が得意とするジャンルの曲がどのように聴衆に受け入れられるかを知ることによって、将来の演奏スタイルを確立することに大いに役立てることができると思います。

　今回の「コンクール＆フェスタ」は事前のテープ審査の結果、世界16ヵ国から40団体139名の優秀な演奏家を迎えて開催します。当財団設立10周年の記念すべき今年、総ての参加者が日頃の練習成果を存分に発揮され一層ハイレベルな演奏を競うコンクールとなることを期待するとともに、国際的な友好親善と相互理解の促進、更には地元大阪の文化発展と大阪からの情報発信に大きく寄与することを心から祈念致しております。

　

It is my great pleasure to present the 4th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition & Festa organized by the Japan Chamber Music Foundation, in order to bring public attention to musicians deeply involved in chamber music. Held for the first time in 1993, this triennial musical event has enjoyed the participation of 657 musicians of 184 groups from 40 countries. Among the 184 groups who achieved outstanding results at the Competition have performed all around the world, enjoying high international repute. On the basis of such excellent achievements, the Competition was admitted to membership in the World Federation of Music Competitions in 1997. I express my sincere appreciation for the support and cooperation of all concerned.

The Osaka International Chamber Music Competition comprises two Sections. The Section I is for the string quartet, the basis of all chamber music, and the Section II is for piano trio on the current occasion. I strongly believe that participating musicians, who must meet the age restrictions imposed by the event, will give their best interpretation to the set pieces, and that they will improve by competing with each other and learning from other promising young musicians' performances. I hope that these young musicians will make great advances as a result of their experiences at the Competition.

The Osaka International Chamber Music Festa, on the other hand, imposes no age restriction, nor does it give participants set pieces. Moreover participating musicians are allowed to use any kind of musical instrument. This new musical competition covers not only Western classical music but also world traditional and folk music. The most striking characteristic of the Festa is that performances are evaluated by about a hundred judges selected from among the general audience. Such various characteristics have attracted international attention to this Festa. I believe that the Festa will help participating musicians establish their own styles of performance by learning how their performances, and pieces of music in their genre, are accepted among the audience.

Prior to the 4th Competition & Festa, 139 musicians of 40 musical groups from 16 countries were selected after preliminary screening. I sincerely hope that all the participating musicians will compete with excellent skill, the fruit of their daily efforts, at this event held at the year of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Japan Chamber Music Foundation, organizer of the Competition & Festa. I also hope that this outstanding event will contribute greatly to the promotion of international friendship and understanding, and to the further development of Osaka as a city of high cultural level and as a base for the transmission of information.

　

　3年毎に開催する「大阪国際室内楽コンクール＆フェスタ」も、今回で4回目となり、準備期間を加えますと丁度10年になります。当コンクールは、21世紀に入るとともに新たなステージに入ることができ、感慨深いものがございます。当コンクールは発足当初よりその水準を高めることに心を配って運営して参りました。お陰様で、第1回目から高い評価をいただくことができましたが、その要因としては、世界の一流音楽家を審査委員にお迎えしていること、各部門で優勝した団体が、日本国内のグランプリ・コンサートをはじめ各国で実績を挙げていることにあると思われます。1997年には加盟が困難な「国際音楽コンクール世界連盟」の会員に認定されたことにより、優秀な団体が更に多数応募するようになりました。

　幸いにも当コンクールは、第1回から名誉芸術監督をお引受けいただいた故ユーディ・メニューイン卿、芸術顧問の故朝比奈隆先生に多大のご指導を賜ることができました。このことは、当コンクールのレベルを高める上で大いに力となり、この場をお借りして故人に衷心よりお礼を申し上げたいと存じます。

　コンクールと同時に開催する「大阪国際室内楽フェスタ」は、クラシック音楽はもとより、世界各国の伝統音楽・民族音楽を対象にしており、楽器の種類を問わないこと、年齢制限がないこと、聴衆審査であること等、世界で唯一の正に「オンリーワン」のユニークな音楽祭として広く知られるようになりました。

　今回の応募団体数は180団体と多数の応募団体の中から、厳正な選考が行われまして、40団体の参加を決定いたしました。世界16ヵ国から40団体の優秀な団体を迎え、第4回コンクール＆フェスタを開催できますことは、主催者といたしましては真に大きな喜びでございます。本事業を通して各国参加者と心をふれあい、国際交流の実をあげることことを切に願っております。

　

Since the event's inauguration, we have organized it with consideration given to elevating the level of performance of participating musicians. Fortunately, the Competition has won a high reputation since it was first held. The main factors in this achievement are that the Jury consists of first-class musicians from all over the world; and that the first-prize winners of sections of the Competition and the Festa have offered finest performances not only during Grand Prix Tours in Japan, but also throughout the world. Since in 1997 the Competition was admitted to membership in the World Federation of International Music Competitions, a membership very difficult to attain, an increasing number of excellent musical groups have entered the Competition.

We, organizers of the Competition & Festa, were fortunate to have had the late Lord Yehudi Menuhin as Honorary Artistic Director and the late Director Takashi Asahina as Artistic Adviser. They provided valuable guidance from the Competition. I would like to express my sincere appreciation for all they did, which greatly helped elevate the level of the Competition.

The Osaka International Chamber Music Festa, which is held concurrently with the Competition, covers not only classical music but also traditional and folk music of the world. The Festa is characterized in that it imposes no restraint on instruments or age of musicians, and that performances at the Festa are judged by the audience. These distinguishing characteristics have caused this event to become widely known as a unique musical festival in the world, in the literal sense.

On the present occasion, we received applications from 180 groups. After a strict and fair pre-selection, 40 groups from 16 countries were invited to offer their performances at the Competition & Festa. It is our greatest pleasure to hold the 4th Competition & Festa with the participation of so many excellent musicians. I sincerely hope that this event will contribute to the promotion of international friendship by providing all participants with an opportunity to get to know each other.

　

　

　1993年（平成5年）に大方の期待を担って発足させた“第1回大阪国際室内楽コンクール＆フェスタ”は、初回から前評判に違わぬ最高レベルの成果を以って世界の音楽界にデビュー・貢献をしたが、愈々21世紀を迎えて始めての第4回を開催するに到ったことは、音楽家として欣快之に優るものはありません。

　室内楽が音楽の原点・基盤である事は今更喋々するまでもありませんが、独奏曲はおろか、オペラですら心と耳の中に室内楽的素養がなければ深くエンジョイすることは不可能です。その室内楽が特にわが国に於いて一番感心の薄いジャンルであることは遺憾な事であるといい続けられて来ました。クラシック音楽が日本人にとって輸入芸術であるから難しいというのは問題の刷り代えですが、此処ではそのことを論じません。

　この音楽の基礎分野でジュネーヴの国際コンクール連盟はもとより全世界の音楽界の驚嘆の的となり得たことは、大阪の、そして日本の現代文化第一級の誇りであると確信しております。

　そもそも室内楽のメンバー構成はモーツァルトやベートーヴェン以前から文字通りグローバルであって、ウィーン近くの世界最高のヴァイオリニストの一人クライスラー、同じくフランスの名手ティボー、フランドルの名手イザイ、名チェリストでもあった大作曲家シェーンベルグで組まれた“夢”のクァルテットは伝説にすらなっておりますが、その輝ける日々を彷佛とさせる若き室内楽グループがわが大阪国際室内楽コンクールから既に3回にして陸続と世界の第一線に飛躍して行っています。

　21世紀は世界的な暗雲に突入した観があります。“苦難を通じて歓喜へ”というフリードリヒ・シラーの理想主義的オプティミズムを思い起こそうではありませんか。この大阪国際室内楽コンクール＆フェスタが、世界の思想・芸術の燦然たる指標の一つであることを堅持して行こうではありませんか。そして全世界の、就中大阪府市民を始めとする関係各位総ての方々のご支援、ご貢献を改めて感謝し、今後とも倍旧のお力添えを衷心よりお願いしながら、各参加グループの健闘と大きな成果を衷心より祈念する次第です。

　

The Osaka International Chamber Music Competition & Festa, held successfully in 1993, met all expectations and contributed to the further development of the world of music. It is therefore of the greatest pleasure for me, a musician, to see that the 4th Competition, which the first in the 2 century, is enjoying the participation of so many excellent musicians.

Needless to say, chamber music is the starting point for music. If you do not have an ear for chamber music, you cannot deeply appreciate solos or operas. However, in Japan particularly, chamber music has been among the least popular musical forms, which situation is very regrettable. Some say that it is difficult for Japanese to have a real appreciation for chamber music because classical music is itself an imported art. I think that this is a mere quibble, and I will not debate it here.

Given this background, I believe that it is the greatest honor not only for Osaka, but for Japan as well, that this Competition, an event that forms a foundation for chamber music development, has excited wonder in the World Federation of Music Competitions in Geneva and throughout the world of music.

Since before the age of Mozart and Beethoven, many outstanding chamber music groups have been composed of members from various countries. Among them is the legendary "dream quartette" of Kreisler, one of the world's greatest violinists, whose musical talent was developed in Vienna; J. Thibaud, a master of French musician; E. Ysae, a great violinist of Flanders; and A. Schnberg, a great composer and cellist. The Osaka International Chamber Music Competition & Festa, although it very young, has produced outstanding young chamber musical groups strongly reminiscent of the quartette. It is my pleasure to note that these groups have been active in the front lines in the world of music.

It seems to me that the 2 century will cast dark clouds over the world. Let us remember the idealistic optimism represented by the words of Friedrich von Schiller "Durch Leiden zur Freude" (Through distress to joy). I strongly hope that this Competition will continue as one of brilliant milestones that brighten the world of music and thought. I express my sincere appreciation for the support and cooperation that all concerned from around the world, including the citizens of Osaka, have given the Competition. I ask your continued support, and firmly hope that all groups participating in the Competition will do their utmost and attain good results.

　

　「第4回大阪国際室内楽コンクール＆フェスタ」が盛大に開催されますことを心からお祝い申し上げます。平成5年を第1回とし、3年ごとに開催されている本コンクール＆フェスタは、世界各国の優秀な室内楽演奏者を顕彰し人材を育成することを目的とするコンクールと、伝統・民族音楽をも対象とし、より自由な形での参加を得て選考が行われるフェスタからなっており、現在では大阪から世界に発信する国際的な室内楽コンクールとして広く知られているところです。

　今回は、世界各国から選ばれた16ヵ国、40の団体が参加されると伺っております。出演される皆様方には、日ごろの研鑽の成果を発揮し、審査員だけでなく聴衆の方々をも魅了する、すばらしい演奏を披露されますことを願っております。

　音楽は、世界共通の言語であり、人々に喜びや心の潤いを与えてくれますが、その中でも室内楽は古い歴史を持つとともに、人間的な温かみも感じさせるものです。本コンクール＆フェスタに参加した方々が、室内楽を通して音楽のすばらしさを認識し、より一層国際交流を深められることを大いに期待しています。

　終わりに、本コンクール＆フェスタの開催にあたり御尽力されました財団法人日本室内楽振興財団の皆様並びに関係者の方々に敬意を表しますとともに、大阪国際室内楽コンクール＆フェスタの御成功と今後ますますの御発展を祈念いたしましてお祝いの言葉といたします。

　

I convey my sincere congratulations on the grand opening of the 4th Osaka International Chamber Music Competition & Festa. This triennial musical event comprises two parts: the Competition, which seeks to honor musicians from around the world who excel in the performance of chamber music, and to elevate the level of performance of participating musicians; the other part comprises the Festa, which imposes no instrument or age restrictions, thereby opening the door not only to classical music groups, but also traditional and folk music ensembles. Held for the first time in 1993, the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition & Festa is now widely known as a world-class chamber music competition.

I am truly delighted to hear that 40 groups from 16 countries have been selected for the 4th Competition & Festa. I strongly hope that they will reap the fruits of their daily efforts and provide brilliant performances that move not only the Jury, but the audience as well.

Likened to a universal language, music brings us the delights of life and spiritual affluence. Chamber music in particular has soothed the hearts of many in its long history. I greatly hope that participants in the Competition & Festa - not only musicians, but also the general audience - will recognize anew the beauty of music and deepen their international friendship through chamber music.

In closing, I extend my appreciation for all the efforts directed by the members of the Japan Chamber Music Foundation, and all concerned in organizing the Competition & Festa; I also wish great success for the 4th Competition & Festa, and for further development of this outstanding musical event.

Held for the first time in 1993, the Competition & Festa, a musical event admitted to membership of the World Federation of International Music Competitions, has since been held three times during the past decade. I am delighted that this 4th Competition & Festa has gained even greater international recognition than ever. I am also greatly pleased to note that many outstanding musicians have come from all over the world to move the audience through colorful performances at the Competition & Festa, contributing further development of this musical event. I would like to express my deepest appreciation for the strenuous efforts of the members of the Japan Chamber Music Foundation in organizing this event.

The Osaka prefectural government seeks to carry out various cultural programs with the aim of creating a culturally advanced society where residents can live active and meaningful lives. I ask your continued assistance and cooperation in our efforts toward cultural promotion.
