17. Research on Risk Analysis Technique of Concurrent Multi-fire 5 4 Maritime Safety Department & Advanced Maritime Transport Technology Department Conducts fire experiments referring to the previous experiment to verify the fire expansion analysis code. Referring to this experiment, performs a final arrangement of the modeling and parameters of the code and makes it more practical. Completes two types of analysis codes (machines/tools damage evaluation code and fire expansion analysis code) that began development in 1999. As regards sample plant evaluation and scenario setting, based on the above experiment and improvement of the present code, collects information and evaluates the occurrence frequency of phenomenon occurring considering a practical object plant, and attempts a preliminary analysis.
18. Research on Support System for Operation and Maintenance Suited to Human Comprehension and Recognition Abilities in Human Coexisting Type Plants 5 4 Maritime Safety Department & Advanced Maritime Transport Technology Department Develops an interface prototype for human coexisting type plants using the program developed last year.
19. Development of Advanced Technology for Measurement of Local Exposure Dose in Response to Diversification of Radioactive Sources 5 4 Maritime Safety Department (1) Develops an apparatus for analyzing the read data including software for it.
(2) Applies this the measurement of local exposure dose and evaluates its performance.
20. Research on Radioactive Shielding in Intermediate Storage System of Consumed Nuclear Fuel 5 2 Maritime Safety Department (1) Estimates the dose distribution in the storage site boundary that holds many storage containers by applying the Monte Carlo division/combination calculation method.
(2) Conducts neutron shield test in boronized water, evaluates the generation of secondary gamma ray and attempts to decrease skyshine.
(3) Conducts radioactivity measurement using the consumed nuclear fuel carrier 'Rokuei-Maru' and its Monte Carlo analysis, and expands the calculation code function.
21. Research on Thermo Fluid Behavior and Rapid Aging of Machines and Tools of Nuclear Reactor Plants 5 2 Environment and Energy Department  
(1) Study on Thermo Fluid Behavior of Nuclear Reactor Plants 5 2 Environment and Energy Department (1) Experimental study on thermo fluid behavior of nuclear reactor plants: Manufactures the test equipment to measure the thermo stress. Conducts experiments using the hydrodynamic oscillation test equipment made last year to acquire hydrodynamic oscillation data on machines and tools of nuclear plants.

(2) Study on Ultra High Cycle Fatigue of Machines and Tools in Nuclear Reactor Plants
5 2 Advanced Maritime Transport Technology Department & Maritime Safety Department (1) Conducts fatigue tests of stainless steal SUS316L in normal temperature atmosphere using the rotating bending fatigue test machine. Purchases a heating machine for test pieces and completes equipment that is able to perform the rotating bending fatigue test in a high temperature atmosphere.
22. Research on Evaluation Technique of Safety for Streaming in Complicated Shaped Space 5 2 Environment and Energy Department (1) Arranges data on secondary gamma ray generated by streaming neutrons. Calculates the behavior of secondary gamma ray in ducts, and builds a database. Develops a simplified calculation method of secondary gamma ray streaming.
(2) Analyzes the transmission behavior of streaming radioactive rays in the shielded rear space by 2D transport code and Monte Carlo calculation.
23. Research on Advanced Code System of Shield Calculation 5 2 Environment and Energy Department (1) Library code of nuclear constant developed in USA: Develops a program to prepare the group constant library for the Sn calculation code from the certified nuclear constant libraries JENDL and ENDF/B, referring to NJOY. Evaluates the library by benchmark calculation.
(2) 3D Sn transport calculation code: Designs the input support system for TORT and prepares its specification.
24. Research on Safety Evaluation Technique for Protection Structure against Collision of Consumed Nuclear Fuel Carriers 3 1 Advanced Maritime Transport Technology Department (1) Investigation of collision scenario and safety criteria: Performs probabilistic safety analysis, proposes a reasonable collision scenario considering the actual operation state.
(2) Simplified analysis of collision strength: Proposes a new simplified analysis method as an alternative to the Minorsky method, and verifies its effectiveness.
(3) FEM simulation analysis for collision: Investigates a reasonable application technique of FEM analysis of elements generation and judgment of destruction. Analyzes for trial the side structure of an existing carrier by FEM and compares with the result by the simplified method for verification.
25. Origination of Innovative Thermal and Fluid Systems by Smart Control of Turbulence 5 3 Center for Smart Control Turbulence  
(1) Study on Turbulence Control of Fluid System by High Function 5 3 Center for Smart Control Turbulence (1) Study on micro-bubble: Manufactures ultra-small channel. Conducts micro-bubble experiments corresponding to numerical simulation, and acquires data for verification.
(2) Study on numerical simulation of multiphase turbulent flow: Examines the effects of pressure distribution around the bubble, velocity gradient and unsteady vortex motion on the bubble motion by direct numerical simulation to obtain information concerning interference of turbulence and bubble. Modeling the obtained information, performs numerical calculation of bubbly flows in channel and examines the agreement of calculated and experimental results.
(3) Study on measuring technique of multiphase flow: Conducts detailed measurement on distribution of turbulent intensity, Reynolds stress and vorticity of fluid phase part in flow field around the bubble, clarifies experimentally the mechanism of frictional drag reduction. (4) Management of Center for Smart Control Turbulence: Monitors studies to be conducted in 2002, holds a general assembly, international conference and evaluation committee, maintains the home page and prepares research reports, evaluation reports in 2001, planning papers and detailed execution of research programs in 2002. (5) Study on bubble generating technique: Using small bubble generation equipment improved in 2001, conducts controlling tests of small bubble in low velocity flow by discharging a water jet into the vicinity of wall. (6) Study on measuring system of microbubble: Improves the system for highly accurate experiment and automatic operation of experiment using the highspeed small channel, and acquires experimental data for verification. Develops control technique to reduce the combustion noise and vibration and confirms its effectiveness and operation range.

(2) Study on Lean Premixed Combustion Using Turbulence Control Technology
5 3 Center for Smart Control Turbulence (1) Combustion characteristics of lean premixed hydrogen combustion chamber: Verifies the performance of the noise control mechanism by variable heating.
(2) Study on combustion simulation: Calculates the flow field of rapidly expanding areas for flame kept in the combustion chamber.
(3) Study on control device and algorithm: Investigates the active noise control device and its algorithm.
26. Experimental Research on Interference of Ice and Oil, and its Diffusion and Drift 3 3 Ocean and Ice Engineering Department As regards the interference of ice and oil, by experiment in a low temperature chamber, investigates the process in the ice melting season of reflowing out oil, which is locked in ice by the oil-ice-sandwich-phenomenon. As for the behavior of oil spilled out into sea ice, conducts experiments in the ice model basin for the following two cases: Water flow under the ice sheet, and sea ice not fully covered by an ice sheet but mixed with ice pieces and water. As this is the final year of this project, completes all studies.
27. Research on Sea Transport of Natural Gas in the Gas Hydrate Pellet State - Study on Safety of Transport of Gas Hydrate Pellet as Bulk Cargo- 3 2 NGH Transport Project Team (1) Measures specific heat, heat conductivity and dissociation heat if necessary and possible.

(2)Evaluates experimentally the difference of the dissociation between with and without the static compressive load. Designs and manufactures the test machines of dynamic loading (cycling load) and conducts preliminary experiments.

(3) Designs and manufactures measuring devices of dissociation speed, and measures the dissociation speed by varying the thermal condition under the self-maintaining state.
(4) As a basis for estimation of the dissociation speed in the full-scale condition,calculates the heat condition considering dissociation (heat consumption reaction).
(5) Corresponding to the concept design progress of the ship (in the charge of mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., LTD), clarifies the summary of necessary safety measures.
28. Development of Floating Lithium Extracting System in Sea Water Using Ocean Energy 3 3 Ocean and Ice Engineering Department & Environment and Energy Department Completes the estimation technique of behavior of wave transmitting type floating body and fluidized bed conditions. Conducts the entire experiment for verification in the deep-sea basin, designs for trial and estimates the economic possibility of the system.
