Ships and marine technology ― Breathing apparatus for ships ― Part 4: Self-contained breathing apparatus for emergency escape required by the IMO IBC and IGC Codes
1 Scope
This International Standard provides performance specifications for the self-contained breathing apparatus required by paragraph 14.2.8.2 of the International Bulk Chemical Code (IBC Code) of International Maritime Organization (IMO) and paragraph 14.4.2.2 of the International Gas Carrier Code (IGC Code) of IMO for emergency escape. Apparatus complying with this International Standard is not intended for fire-fighting, cargo handling, or approach or entry into flames.
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this International Standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of ISO and IEC maintain registers of currently valid International Standards.
International Bulk Chemical Code (IBC Code)
International Gas Carrier Code (IGC Code)
ISO 23269-1: YYYY, Emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD) for shipboard use
For the purposes of this International Standard, the terms and definitions specified in ISO 23269-1:YYYY shall apply.
4 General design requirements
The apparatus shall comply with all of the requirements of clause 4 of ISO 23269-1 (Emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD) for shipboard use).
The apparatus shall comply with all of the requirements of clause 5 of ISO 23269-1 (Emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD) for shipboard use).
6 Basic performance tests and requirements
The apparatus shall comply with all of the requirements of clause 6 of ISO 23269-1 (Emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD) for shipboard use), with the exception of clause 6.4 (Flame resistance), except that:
a) The breathing time for the rated working duration in accordance with clause 6.1 shall be 15 minutes.
b) The breathing time for overloading in accordance with clause 6.2 shall be 3 minutes.
6.1 Chemical resistance test of the eyepiece and transparent materials
Apply solvents, trichloroethylene, benzene, solvent naphtha, methanol and kerosene to the eyepiece or transparent part. There shall be no dissolution or deterioration to the extent to make the eyepiece or transparent part unusable.
6.2 Chemical resistance test of facepiece
Immerse a facepiece in the liquids listed in Table 1 (temperature of the liquids 22 ± 2 ℃) for 1 hour and hang in air of temperature 22 ± 2 ℃ and relative humidity 95% for 24 hours. There shall be no corrosion or crack to make the facepiece unusable.

7 Additional tests and requirements
7.1 Donning test
The apparatus shall be tested in accordance with clause 7.1 of ISO 23269-1 (Emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD) for shipboard use).
7.2 Practical performance test
The apparatus shall be tested in accordance with clause 7.2 of ISO 23269-1 (Emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD) for shipboard use), except that a vertical manhole (an opening 600 mm high and 800 mm wide, with the center of the opening at a height of 900 mm from the floor) shall be added to the test course.
Each apparatus shall be provided with instructions for use which shall contain all the information, including diagrams, necessary for use and maintenance of the apparatus.
Each apparatus shall be marked with:
a) Name of the apparatus
b) Type of the apparatus
c) Year and month of the manufacture
d) Serial number
e) Manufacturer or trade mark
f) Approval information
g) Expiration date of approval (if any)
h) Next date of servicing/retest (if any)
i) If training unit, it shall be clearly marked as such
