ISO/WD XXXXX-3
Ships and marine technology ― Breathing apparatus for ships ― Part 3: Self-contained breathing apparatus (safety equipment) required by the IMO IBC and IGC Codes
1 Scope
This International Standard provides performance specifications of the self-contained air-breathing apparatus (not using stored oxygen) required by International Bulk Chemical Code (IBC Code) and International Gas Carrier Code (IGC Code) of International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The breathing apparatus manufactured in accordance with this International Standard forms part of the set of safety equipment, which permits personnel to enter a gas-filled compartment and perform work there. The breathing apparatus are also intended for use in fighting small to medium magnitude fires before operation of any installed fixed fire-fighting systems. They are not intended or suitable for entry into flames.

2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this International Standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of ISO and IEC maintain registers of currently valid International Standards.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this International Standard, the terms and definitions defined in ISO 23269-2 shall apply.

4 General design requirements
The apparatus shall comply with all of the requirements of clause 4 of ISO 23269-2 (Breathing apparatus for shipboard firefighters).

5 Environmental tests
The apparatus shall comply with all of the requirements of clause 5 of ISO 23269-2 (Breathing apparatus for shipboard firefighters).

6 Basic performance tests and requirements
The apparatus shall comply with all of the requirements of clause 6 of ISO 23269-2 (Breathing apparatus for shipboard firefighters), with the exception of clauses 6.10 (Flame resistance) and 6.11 (Heat resistance). In addition, the apparatus shall be subjected to the tests prescribed in 6.1 through 6.3 of this standard.

6.1 Chemical permeation resistance test
Two test subjects shall be chosen, so that one of them is tall largish head and the other is short. The test subjects shall don the breathing apparatus together with the protective clothing and other related safety equipment. Sprinkle coloured water from top and side upon the test subjects who stand upright. After the sprinkling water, check the face of the subjects. There shall be no permeation of water through facepiece of the breathing device

6.2 Chemical resistance test of the eyepiece and transparent materials
Apply solvents, trichloroethylene, benzene, solvent naphtha, methanol and kerosene to the eyepiece or transparent part. There shall be no dissolution or deterioration to the extent to make the eyepiece or transparent part unusable.

6.3 Chemical resistance test of facepiece
Immerse a facepiece in the test liquids specified in Table 1 (temperature of the liquids 22 ± 2 ℃) for 1 hour and hang in air of temperature 22 ± 2 ℃ and relative humidity 95% for 24 hours. There shall be no corrosion or crack to make the facepiece unusable.

Table 1 ― Test liquids for chemical resistance test
Test liquids Concentration
Sodium chloride solution 0.05
Sulfuric acid solution 0.01
Nitric acid solution 0.01
Sodium hydroxide 0.01

7 Additional tests and requirements
7.1 Donning test
The apparatus shall be tested in accordance with clause 7.1 of ISO 23269-2 (Breathing apparatus for shipboard firefighters).

7.2 Practical performance test
The apparatus shall be tested in accordance with clause 7.2 of ISO 23269-2 (Breathing apparatus for shipboard firefighters), except that a vertical manhole (an opening 600 mm high and 800 mm wide, with the center of the opening at a height of 900 mm from the floor) shall be added to the test course, and in addition to the apparatus, the test subjects shall wear protective clothing and related safety equipment.

8 Instructions for use
Each apparatus shall be provided with instructions for use which shall contain all the information, including diagrams, necessary for use and maintenance of the apparatus.

9 Marking
Each apparatus shall be marked with:

a) Name of the apparatus

b) Type of the apparatus

c) Year and month of the manufacture

d) Serial number

e) Manufacturer or trade mark

f) Approval information

g) Expiration date of approval (if any)

h) Next date of servicing/retest (if any)
