6 Performance tests
6.1 Demand valve
If a by-pass valve is incorporated in the demand valve, the demand valve shall pass at least 60 l/min, at all air cylinder pressures above 5 MPa.
(to be modified in test sequence) [The cylinder valve is opened (the air cylinder is to be fully charged and when the breathing apparatus is completely pressurized, the cylinder valve is closed and the pressure drop is measured by observing the pressure gauge of the breathing apparatus. The pressure drop shall not be greater than 2 MPa/min. In this case, the facepiece seal shall be completely sealed using a dummy head or similar.)
6.3 Inhalation resistance
The inhalation peak pressure in the cavity (space between eyepiece and inner mask) of the mask adjacent to the face seal shall be positive at a sinusoidal flow of 25 cycle/min x 2,0 l/stroke at all cylinder pressures above 1MPa and at a sinusoidal flow of 40 cycle/min x 2,5 l/stroke at all cylinder pressures above 2MPa.
6.4 Exhalation resistance
With the breathing apparatus connected to the breathing machine and at a sinusoidal flow of 25 cycle/min x 2,0 l/stroke and 40 cycle/min x 2,5 l/stroke, the exhalation peak pressure shall be a positive pressure of not more than 1 kPa and 1.5 kPa respectively.
6.5.1 Metallic high pressure tubes, valves and couplings shall be tested to prove that they are capable of withstanding a pressure of 150% of the maximum filling pressure of the compressed air cylinder.
6.5.2 Non-metallic components shall be tested to prove that they are capable of withstanding a pressure of twice the maximum filling pressure of the compressed air cylinder.
6.6 Equilibrium pressure in the facepiece
Equilibrium pressure in the facepiece, when not breathing, shall not be greater than 600Pa.
6.7.1 Leak-tightness
The test shall be carried out using a dummy head and a negative pressure of -1 kPa created in the cavity of the mask. The change of pressure shall not exceed 100 Pa in 1 min. When conducting this test the inhalation port shall be sealed and the exhalation valve disc shall be moistened.
Each strap, buckles and attachment lugs (if present) shall withstand a pull of 100 N applied for 10 s in the direction of pulling when the full facepiece is donned. This test shall be carried out with 3 samples.
6.7.3 Strength of connection
The faceblank shall be supported on a dummy head and a system of restraining straps or bands shall be fitted over the face-blank around the connection so that the force is not applied to the head harness. The connection between the face-blank and the connector shall withstand axially a tensile force of 250N applied for 10s. This test shall be carried out with 3 samples.
Where a speech diaphragm is fitted:
The speech diaphragm shall withstand a differential pressure of 8 kPa (static pressure) applied suddenly with the positive pressure on the outside. 3 samples shall be tested.
When a speech diaphragm assembly can be subjected to an external force it shall withstand axially a tensile force of 150 N applied for 10 s. The test shall be repeated 9 times at 10 s intervals. 3 samples shall be tested.
Mechanical strength of the eyepiece or visor shall be tested using a completely assembled full facepiece mounted on a dummy head such that a steel ball (22 mm in diameter and approximately 44 g) falls normally from the height of 1.30 m on the center of the eyepiece. After the test the facepiece shall not be damaged in any way that may make it ineffective or cause injury to the wearer. The full facepiece shall meet the requirements of 6.6.1. 5 samples shall be tested.
6.7.6 Tensile strength of exhalation valve housing
When the exhalation valve housing is attached to the faceblank, it shall withstand axially a tensile force of 50 N applied for 10 s. This test shall be repeated 9 times at 10 s intervals. The full facepiece shall meet the requirements of 6.6.1 before and after the test. 3 samples shall be tested.
6.7.7 Carbon dioxide content of the inhalation air
The facepiece shall be fitted to the dummy head and air shall be supplied to it from the breathing machine 25 cycle/min x 2,0 l/stroke and the carbon dioxide content of exhaled air shall be adjusted to 5% (by volume). The carbon dioxide content of the inhalation air, collected from near the lip of the dummy, shall not exceed an average of 1% (by volume). The measured value may be adjusted with the ambient carbon dioxide level.
The inward leakage of test agent shall be measured in accordance with an International standard or equivalent national standard, using 10 test subjects, and the average leakage shall not exceed 0,05%. Where the full facepieces can be cleaned and disinfected, the masks cleaned and disinfected in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction shall be used for this test.
NOTE Clause 8.16 of EN 136 has been found suitable for the test.
The field of vision shall be measured by correctly fitting the full facepiece to dummy head and projecting light from electric valves placed in the place of eye balls to the apertometer bowl. The effective field of vision shall not be less than 70%, related to the natural overlapped field of vision.
The volume of remaining air shall not be less then 200 l when warning device responds. After response of the warning device, the wearer shall be able to continue breathing without difficulty.
6.9 Medium pressure connecting tube
Tubes to the demand valve (connections included) shall withstand, for 15 min, twice the operating pressure of the pressure reducer safety valve or at least 3 MPa whichever is higher.
6.10 Flame resistance of the facepiece, harness, breathing tube(s), medium pressure tube(s) and demand valve
The components other than those made of non-combustible material shall be tested in accordance with this clause.
Supply propane of purity not less than 95 % to a Bunsen burner (inner diameter. (9,5 ± 0,5) mm) and adjust the flame to steady blue flame of about 25 mm in height. When this flame is applied to horizontally placed test pieces for 2 s, the facepiece shall not develop an opening and other parts shall not produce flaming or molten debris or ignite. In this case an opening means a hole of 5 mm x 5 mm or more.
In this test, the pressure cylinder shall be empty. Quickly insert the sample into the oven preheated to 180 ℃ (+5, -0 ℃) and leave them for 5 min. The sample shall not produce flaming or molten debris or ignite.
