Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.

Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 23269 may be the subject of patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

International Standard ISO 23269-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 8, Ships and marine technology, Subcommittee SC 1, Lifesaving and fire protection.

ISO 23269 consists of the following parts, under the general title Ships and marine technology ― Breathing apparatus for ships:

Part 1: Emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD) for shipboard use

Part 2: Breathing apparatus for shipboard firefighters

Part 3: Self-contained breathing apparatus (safety equipment) required by the IMO IGC and IBC Codes

Part 4: Self-contained breathing apparatus for emergency escape required by the IMO IGC and IBC Codes

Introduction
Emergency escape breathing device (EEBD) has been developed for use in emergency escape purpose at fire and other occasion where evacuation is needed but the air in the circumstance is not good for breath. EEBD is not intended for use in fighting fires, entering oxygen-deficient voids or tanks, or to be worn by fire-fighters.

(to be redrafted by Kurt) IMO has found that EEBD is quite useful for safety of persons on board ships. Therefore, t The installation of EEBD in merchant ships has been required in international maritime regulations in the International Convention of Safety of Life at Sea 1974 (74 OSLAS) as amended in 2000, which has entered into force since July 1st, 2002. SOLAS and related mandatory International Code for Fire Safety Systems (FSS Code) prescribe performance requirement of EEBD, but detailed standard for EEBD, which is also necessary to provide sufficient safety level for users of EEBD, has been left for further development.

ISO/TC8/SC1 has taken the task of development of the detailed standard for EEBD. This standard is the result of such development.
