Sizes and reflective material on buoyancy aid again.
Report N 33 1 item 12 Buoyancy aids 50 N.
It was agreed with a small majority that the weight class should be decreased to 25 kg (from 30kg). Very recently we had a Nordic meeting with manufacturers authorities and a test house and we raised the problem again. We think that it is important that non-swimmers wear life jackets. There should be no opportunity for those children 7-9 years of age and non-swimmers to wear buoyancy aids.

This class E buoyancy aids 50N are designed for adults who are able to swim. A person of 25 kg is about 7 years old. In Sweden very few 7 years old children are able to swim. In the EN-393 standard this small size is not allowed and this rule was very essential for au consumer representatives and not questioned by anyone when the European standard was developed.

We also would like to discuss the requirement on retro reflective material on buoyancy aids again.
The "Nordic meeting" was of the opinion that it should not be mandatory to have retro reflective material on buoyancy aids. A lot of people in the Nordic Countries prefer using buoyancy aids. They think that they are comfortable and appreciate that they don't look like a device containing buoyancy material. Several vests and jackets are "hiding" the buoyancy material. They look like ordinary clothing. Putting on a retro reflective material on those devises would make them less attractive to wear. Very, very few people who have fallen over board in a small lake or river are looked for by a rescue action and very seldom in the night.
