Visit Japan Program
This program will be terminated in Fiscal Year 2003. The final application deadline is May 15, 2003 for visits beginning from October 1, 2003 to March 31, 2004.
 
Purpose: This program provides the recipients of SYLFF fellowships with the opportunity to visit Japan for a specific academic purpose, such as conducting research, field work, attending a short-term course or seminar in the applicant's field of specialization, or for a practical objective, e.g., a short-term internship in a Japanese organization, and to become familiar with the SYLFF program's host country.
 
Eligibility: Applicants must be either currently enrolled or graduated SYLFF fellows, i.e., must have received a SYLFF fellowship.
 
Awards: Approximately ten awards of up to JP\1,000,000 each are available each year to cover round-trip economy-class air ticket to Japan, local transportation, insurance, accommodation and other allowances and handed to the awardee upon his/her arrival in Japan.
 
Application procedure: Applicants must submit the following to the Scholarship Division-(1) completed application form, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) detailed proposal, (4) comprehensive itinerary, (5) list of individuals or institutions to be visited, and (5) other supporting documents.
 
Applications are received twice a year as follows:
First Cycle:
For visits beginning April 1〜September 30
Application deadline: November 15
Notification: on or about February 15
Second Cycle:
For visits beginning October 1〜March 31
Application deadline May 15
Notification on or about July 15
 
Program Development Award (PDA)
Purpose: This program is designed to give staff at SYLFF institutions the opportunity to initiate and/or activate student focused programs at the graduate level with other SYLFF institutions. The focus on student exchange includes activity such as the development of joint degree and so-called sandwich programs at the master's and doctoral levels within the parameters of the social sciences and humanities.
 
Eligibility: Applicants must be full-time staff, with or without faculty rank, at a SYLFF institution (refer to the list). All applicants must have designated responsibility for the proposed activity.
 
Awards: Awards of up to US$10,000 each are awarded to cover transportation, accommodation and meals as determined by the Scholarship Division. Approximately 10 awards are available each year.
 
Application procedure: The following must be submitted together to the Scholarship Division- (1) completed application form, (2) curriculum vitae, (3) project schedule, (4) itemized budget, and (5) letter(s) of invitation from the host institution(s).
 
Applications are received twice a year as follows:
First Cycle:
For visits beginning April 1〜September 30
Application deadline: November 15
Notification: on or about February 15
Second Cycle:
For visits beginning October 1〜March 31
Application deadline May 15
Notification; on or about July 15
