Crystallizing the Idea --- the San Diego Meeting
・At the San Diego meeting of SYLFF directors, the idea was developed and expanded to include Howard, USP, University of the Western Cape, Massey University, and York University
・Focus was on the topic of "Race, Development and Social Inequality"
The Sasakawa Forum Proposal
・After San Diego, the five aforementioned universities developed a Sasakawa Forum proposal
・Concept was to hold five preliminary workshops, one in each country at each university, with a concluding 3-day Forum at Howard in Washington
・A key idea was to ensure that at each workshop there would be Sasakawa Fellows participating from each country as well as at the final forum
・Another key was that Sasakawa Fellows were to play a key role in the academic decisions regarding papers and speakers
