Home for the Faculty of Social Sciences
Main building of the Faculty of Social Sciences is located at Unioninkatu 37 in the Helsinki City centre. It is called the "Old Clinic, i.e. the Clinical Institute was part of the neo-classical city centre designed by Engel. The building was occupied by the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases until the beginning of the 1990's.
SYLFF Programme at the University of Helsinki
The Program for International and Cultural Studies Year Endowed: 1991
The program supports the education of graduate students with high potential for future leadership, both in public life and private endeavours. The program includes graduate students engaged in 1)international relations, 2)Asian and African studies and 3)social and cultural anthropology.
SYLFF fellowships are announced in the university newsletter, bimonthly magazine Yliopisto, official bulletin boards of the university, and departmental newsletters. Selection is based on the following criteria: academic performance, research plan, and feasibility and potential of the plan. To date 26 fellowships have been awarded.
Home for Area Studies and History
The Renvall Institute for Area and Cultural Studies and the Department of History are located at the Topelia Quarter (Unioninkatu 38) in the Helsinki City centre. The building, completed in 1823, first served as a military academy for orphaned boys. In 1832 it was turned into a military hospital. When the Russian army left Finland in 1918, the buildings were transformed into University clinics.
