Nearly 70% of the U.S. population was involved, to some degree, in sports participation during the year 2000, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's (SGMA) "Sports Participation In America". Last year more than 170 million Americans, aged six and older, participated at least once in over 100 sports and recreational pursuits. This information was gleaned from the Superstudy [R] of Sports Participation conducted for SGMA by American Sports Data, Inc. Some of the highlights from "Sports Participation In America"are:
1) Of the 36.2 million fitness walkers, 10.3 million say it's their favorite fitness activity.
2) Skateboarding participation grew by more than 60% from 1998 to 2000.
3) Basketball remains the most popular team sport, with 37.6 million participants.
4) Most team sports are dominated by teenage players.
5) Female participation in tennis has grown in the past ten years-to 45%of all tennis players.
6) Of those who play golf, 30% named it their favorite activity.
7) Tent camping has increased almost 20% between 1987-2000, indicating a growing interest in outdoor pursuits.

PCPFS is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, promotes public health by encouraging and stimulating Americans of all ages to commit to regular physical activity and fitness. PCPFS seeks to motivate Americans to become physically active throughout life and emphasizes the importance of regular physical activity/fitness for overall good health.
